Need This Done For You?
These guides are written for owners who want to understand the tradeoffs, then move fast. If you want the implementation handled for you, the contact flow keeps the handoff on-site and gets the first draft moving quickly.
Many local businesses do not have a storefront.
- A plumber drives to customer homes.
- A mobile dog groomer operates from a van.
- A home organizer works on-site.
These are called Service Area Businesses (SABs).
A common concern among SAB owners is: "How do I rank in Google's Map Pack if I work from home and don't want strangers showing up at my door?"
Google has specific rules for SABs. You can rank in the Map Pack without showing a public physical address. Here is how to configure your local SEO correctly.
1. Setting Up Google Business Profile as an SAB
When creating your Google Business Profile (GBP), Google asks for a physical location to mail a verification postcard. You must provide your real home address for this step.
However, once verified, you must check the setting to hide your address:
- Go to your GBP dashboard and click Edit Profile.
- Under the Location tab, find Business location.
- Toggle off the option to "Show business address to customers."
- Next, go to Service Area and define the cities, counties, or zip codes you actually travel to (stay within a 2-hour driving limit to satisfy Google's guidelines).
Instead of a pin drop at your home address, Google will now display a red outline representing your service boundaries.
2. Targeting Neighboring Cities Safely
Since you don't have a public office, you cannot set up multiple Google Business Profiles in different cities. Doing so is a direct violation of Google's terms and will get your entire account suspended.
Instead, to rank in other cities, you must optimize your website's landing pages.
Create unique, high-quality Local Landing Pages for each main city you serve.
- Focus on localized project summaries, local customer reviews, and service details.
- Avoid duplicate doorway pages (learn the difference in our Doorway Pages vs. Local Landing Pages Guide).
3. Consistency in Citations (Hiding the Address)
When building citations on other business directories (like Yelp, Clutch, or YellowPages), you must maintain consistency.
- Match directories to GBP: If you hide your address on Google, hide it on Yelp and Bing Places as well.
- NAP Consistency: Your Name and Phone number must match exactly.
- Learn more about how directories build credibility in our Local Link Building Guide.
4. Driving Trust Signals
Because searchers cannot visit your office, they need extra reassurance that you are a legitimate business.
- Show the van/team: Add real photos of your branded vehicles, equipment, and crew. This proves you are an active local service.
- Gather reviews aggressively: Reviews are the #1 ranking factor for SABs. Make it a habit to send review links immediately after finishing a job. Follow our guide on how to get more Google reviews.
SAB Local SEO Checklist
