Video SEO: How to Get Your YouTube and Site Videos Indexing in Google

Video content can drive massive search traffic. Learn how to format video embeds, implement VideoObject Schema, and rank in Google's Video tab.

Need This Done For You?

These guides are written for owners who want to understand the tradeoffs, then move fast. If you want the implementation handled for you, the contact flow keeps the handoff on-site and gets the first draft moving quickly.

Video is the most engaging content format online. But did you know it is also an incredible source of search engine traffic?

Google displays video results directly in main search results, inside Featured Snippets, and in the dedicated Videos Search Tab.

If you just copy and paste a YouTube iframe onto your page and hope for the best, Google will likely ignore it. To rank, you must configure Video SEO signals that help search crawlers understand and index your media.

Here is how to optimize your video content for Google Search.

1. Hosting: YouTube vs. Self-Hosting

The first decision is where to host your files.

  • YouTube (Best for Visibility): YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world. Hosting on YouTube exposes your video to YouTube searchers and makes it easy for Google (which owns YouTube) to discover and index the clip.
  • Vimeo or Wistia (Best for On-Site Conversions): If you want to keep visitors on your page without showing YouTube ads or related competitor videos, Vimeo or Wistia are excellent. They write clean embedding code designed to pass PageSpeed checks.
  • Self-Hosting (Avoid): Hosting raw video files (like .mp4) directly on your web server consumes massive bandwidth and slows page load times, damaging your Core Web Vitals scores.

2. Implement VideoObject Schema Markup

This is the most critical step. Search bots cannot "watch" your video. You must explain it to them using structured code called VideoObject Schema.

This schema tells Google:

  • The title and description of the video.
  • The upload date.
  • The thumbnail URL.
  • The duration of the video.
  • The actual media file URL or embed URL.

Example JSON-LD Video Schema:

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "VideoObject",
  "name": "How to Prevent Frozen Pipes in Winter",
  "description": "A step-by-step tutorial on draining your outdoor spigots to prevent burst pipes.",
  "thumbnailUrl": "https://devmellio.com/images/video-thumb.jpg",
  "uploadDate": "2026-10-15T08:00:00+08:00",
  "duration": "PT3M15S",
  "embedUrl": "https://www.youtube.com/embed/example"
}

By adding this snippet to your page's code, Google can display a video rich snippet (complete with play buttons and timestamps) directly in search results.

3. Define Video Chapters (Key Moments)

Have you ever searched for a tutorial and seen Google highlight specific sections of a video ("Key Moments: How to turn the valve at 1:12" )?

You can enable this on your own site:

  • YouTube Chapters: If hosting on YouTube, add timestamps to your description (e.g. 01:12 - Turning the water valve). Google reads these and maps them onto search results automatically.
  • SeekToAction Schema: If self-hosting, use SeekToAction schema in your code to tell Google's bot where major segments start.

4. Give the Video Center Stage

Google will only index a video if it is a primary focus of the page.

  • Above the Fold: Put the video near the top of the page so it is visible immediately when loading.
  • One per Page: If you embed multiple videos, Google will usually only index the first one. Designate one primary video per landing page.
  • Relevant Content: Surround the video embed with text transcripts, descriptions, or summaries. This provides context and boosts On-Page SEO signals.

Video SEO Checklist

  • Host videos on YouTube or Wistia/Vimeo (do not self-host raw files).
  • Place the video player near the top of the page.
  • Add custom VideoObject Schema to the head of the page.
  • Add descriptive text summaries or transcripts below the player.

Implementing rich media assets like video increases visitor dwell time, which sends excellent user experience signals to Google. Check out our DIY SEO Audit Guide to inspect your media layouts.
